Therapeutic Approaches

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a type of therapy that has been found effective for many different concerns, including depression, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and interpersonal difficulties.

This type of therapy focuses on the ways your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors all impact each other. The goal is to focus on and change present thought and behavior patterns to create changes and reduce symptoms.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a type of therapy that aims to cultivate a “life worth living.” It can help us live in the moment using Mindfulness, cope with stress in a healthy way using Distress Tolerance, regulate our emotions using Emotion Regulation, and improve our relationships using Interpersonal Effectiveness.

Dialectical thinking (the "D" in DBT) refers to the ability to hold multiple perspectives at once. The core dialectic in DBT is the balance of acceptance and change; "we are wonderful the way we are and there are things we may need to change in order to be and/or do better." While we do not offer DBT groups in conjunction with individualized therapy, our DBT-trained therapists will work with you on an individual basis to create a treatment plan that works best for your goals.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) is a type of therapy that can help you heal from past life events that impact you in the present. EMDR taps into a natural healing process in our brain to help “unlock” traumatic or distressing memories.

In doing so, it reduces the overall distress connected to the memory and aids in shifting a negative belief to a more positive and adaptive belief about yourself. In essence, it helps you feel a greater sense of control and agency over your past experiences instead of the other way around. Our EMDR-trained therapists provide EMDR therapy virtually or in-person based on the availability of the therapist.

Trauma therapy is a form of psychotherapy designed to manage the impact of traumatic events on people's lives. Trauma therapy helps people process traumatic events and the lasting experience of trauma that may follow those events. Trauma-informed therapists understand the impact of traumatic events on the brain and nervous system, as well as post traumatic stress and other aspects of physical and mental health.

Trauma-informed care recognizes that people experience trauma on an individual, community or systemic level, and that the impact of racial trauma on People of Color brings the same post traumatic stress and the same need for healing. To be a trauma-informed provider means not only recognizing the impact of trauma, but providing services in ways that are safe and collaborative, and that do not re-traumatize the person seeking care.

Psychodynamic therapy uses many of the ideas and theories found in psychoanalysis, but with a more modern approach to treatment. It is a form of talk therapy that explores how the connections from past life experiences-often from childhood- affect your current mindset and behavioral patterns, and can help people gain insight to heal old wounds and make healthier decisions in the future.

Psychodynamic therapy may address attachment bonds to caregivers and other significant relationships, identity formation, and the use of defense mechanisms. All therapeutic treatments will be most successful when there is a good relationship between client and therapist, but especially in psychodynamic therapy where healing relies heavily on the trust and safety built through the therapeutic relationship.

Art therapy is a form of treatment that incorporates creative methods of expression through visual art media.  This could include the use of paint, pencils, collages, digital art, or other art forms depending on your needs and goals. One important thing that art therapists want you to know: You don't need to have any prior experience with art at all!!!!

Art therapists can use the creative process to help you increase insight, cope with stress, work through traumatic experiences, increase cognitive abilities, improve interpersonal relationships, and achieve greater self-fulfillment. Art therapy can also be used in conjunction with your regular talk-therapy and used on an as-needed basis.
